Right now in the United States, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment in redefining our food system. The future of our food is being decided by lawmakers right now. The best part? You have the power to voice your opinion to help shape it.

The Farm Bill, a crucial piece of legislation reviewed every five years (the last was in 2018), sets the tone for our nation's food and agriculture policy. Our elected officials are considering which proposals will be included in this year's bill – decisions impacting our food system for the next five years. The bill controls how billions of taxpayer dollars are used to set up crop insurance, fund crop subsidies, and agricultural research to assist food production and invest in sustainable agricultural practices. It also maintains food assistance programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which supports nearly 42 million Americans.

It's time for a more equitable food system that prioritizes the environment, farmers, racial equity, and local food systems, thus creating a more just, resilient, and regenerative food system in our country. By familiarizing yourself with the Bill and Acts accompanying it, you can put yourself in a position to advocate for what you feel most strongly about.

A recent article from National Co+op Grocers (NCG) provides a detailed list of current proposed bills, outlining their goals and who supports them. Whether it's a bill that champions justice for black farmers, protecting America's meatpacking workers, or incentivizing organic farming and composting, you can find the ones you resonate with and lend them your support.

Feeling overwhelmed and not sure where to start?

Step 1. Visit the above link and start with 1 bill you think is important.

Step 2. Visit www.govtrack.us and search for that bill name in the upper right box.

Step 3. Click "call or write congress" and follow the instructions for finding & contacting your representatives.

It is that simple! And urge your representatives to work together and do so quickly. The 2018 bill expires September 30th, and some acts will expire unless passed in time. Use your voice today!

National Co+op Grocers (NCG) recently announced their 2022 Food Co-op Impact Report. NCG’s member co-ops ( Deep Roots Market being one of them) collectively report impact data to measure the benefits that the “average” food co-op brings its community.

The Food Co-op Impact Report is invaluable to NCG's work on federal policy and helps them communicate to lawmakers in D.C. why supporting food co-ops directly benefits their state or district’s economy, constituents, and farmers. This helps NCG advocate for the things that are important to NCG food co-ops and your customers, including racial equity in our food system, funding, and policies that support SNAP and SNAP incentive programs, local agriculture, strong organic standards, and the inclusion of organic agriculture in climate change policy.

Because of their social and economic benefits and resiliency, cooperative businesses are getting a lot of attention in Congress and that’s likely to increase. Having the data to communicate that impact helps NCG argue for more funds to support cooperative development and grow the cooperative economy.

The City of Greensboro’s Office of Sustainability, along with the Community Sustainability Council launched its inaugural #LiveGreen Awards Program this year. As part of Greensboro’s path toward becoming a more sustainable community, the #LiveGreen Awards Program was created to recognize leadership in sustainable business practices. Greensboro residents were invited to submit their nominations and we were awarded the Quality of Life Award!

"Quality of Life Award – For achievements in promoting living wage, access to education, access to healthcare and childcare, access to healthy foods, or other innovative quality of life practices."

We are honored to receive this and provide this service for our community. More than just a grocery store!!

You may have seen these posters around our store but not had a chance to unpack them. We choose items in our store that uplift our values so as a consumer you have the agency and access to vote with your dollars, without the marketing BS!

When you become an Owner you are automatically enrolled. This is one of the ways Owners can save by shopping here but also a reminder that an item on a shelf is much more than a price, it is a transaction. A transaction that went through many hands.

How the people that make our food, how it gets here, and the impact it has on our environment all matter. Taproots allows those products to stand out a little louder.

Food is necessary to life so should it support life?  We think so, so we made it our value program.
