National Co+op Grocers (NCG) raised $157,050 from industry and brand partners last month to benefit North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems (NĀTIFS).

NĀTIFS was chosen to shine a light on its purpose to re-establish Native foodways in North America that generate wealth and improve health in Native communities. The donation included $100K from NCG, and $25K from UNFI, which pledged to donate $1 for every case that grocery co-ops purchased at a recent Vendor Showcase!

Right now in the United States, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment in redefining our food system. The future of our food is being decided by lawmakers right now. The best part? You have the power to voice your opinion to help shape it.

The Farm Bill, a crucial piece of legislation reviewed every five years (the last was in 2018), sets the tone for our nation's food and agriculture policy. Our elected officials are considering which proposals will be included in this year's bill – decisions impacting our food system for the next five years. The bill controls how billions of taxpayer dollars are used to set up crop insurance, fund crop subsidies, and agricultural research to assist food production and invest in sustainable agricultural practices. It also maintains food assistance programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which supports nearly 42 million Americans.

It's time for a more equitable food system that prioritizes the environment, farmers, racial equity, and local food systems, thus creating a more just, resilient, and regenerative food system in our country. By familiarizing yourself with the Bill and Acts accompanying it, you can put yourself in a position to advocate for what you feel most strongly about.

A recent article from National Co+op Grocers (NCG) provides a detailed list of current proposed bills, outlining their goals and who supports them. Whether it's a bill that champions justice for black farmers, protecting America's meatpacking workers, or incentivizing organic farming and composting, you can find the ones you resonate with and lend them your support.

Feeling overwhelmed and not sure where to start?

Step 1. Visit the above link and start with 1 bill you think is important.

Step 2. Visit www.govtrack.us and search for that bill name in the upper right box.

Step 3. Click "call or write congress" and follow the instructions for finding & contacting your representatives.

It is that simple! And urge your representatives to work together and do so quickly. The 2018 bill expires September 30th, and some acts will expire unless passed in time. Use your voice today!

We are focusing on all lung and respiratory supporting herbs to help us battle this awful air quality. You can drink mullein tea to enjoy its health benefits. You can also take a mullein capsule. Mullein benefits your respiratory tract — especially when fighting illness — in several ways:

1. Loosens mucus

Mullein is an expectorant, a substance that thins mucus (phlegm) and makes it easier to cough up. Expectorants help break up mucus to get it out of your system.

2. Calms inflammation

When you have lung and throat issues, using mullein may relieve some of your discomfort. Its flowers and leaves contain mucilage, which coats mucous membranes (the moist linings inside your respiratory tract) with a film, reducing inflammation.

Because of its anti-inflammatory effects, salves, and oils that contain mullein can also help relieve pain and irritation in skin wounds.

3. Protects cells

Mullein contains antioxidants, including vitamin C and flavonoids (substances found in fruits and vegetables). Antioxidants protect cells from free radicals, unstable molecules that damage your cells.

To prepare as a tea, pour 8 oz. boiling water over 1-2 teaspoons. Cover and steep for 5-10 minutes, strain and enjoy! Available in our bulk section $1.69/oz.
