What inspired you to serve as a board member for Deep Roots Market?

Ashleigh was born and raised in the Greensboro/Jamestown area, a member of St. Matthews Church, and a graduate of A&T. In 2020 she returned to Greensboro from Chicago. After being gone for a decade she sought ways to reconnect with the city and community. She was first tipped off to visit Deep Roots Market for the selection of Elderberry Syrup, and thus discovered Greensboro’s trove of food and community. Drawn in by the friendliness and culture of the co-op she began as an Owner before running for a seat on the Board of Directors. As the granddaughter of a farmer in this area she greatly appreciates that Deep Roots Market gives support and recognition to black farmers in our community.

Most valuable Co-op Principle?

#5. Education, Training, and Information
“Cooperatives provide education and training for their members, elected representatives, managers, and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their co-operatives. They inform the general public about the nature and benefits of co-operation.”

Ashleigh believes that Nutritional education is crucial in teaching people that there is not a one size fits all model of health. She believes this is significantly important in the African American community as the battle against diabetes and high cholesterol weighs heavily. She feels that when you walk into DRM you see the community reflected in the store through social movements, environmental issues, and food justice.

Who is someone you look up to/role model?

Yvonne Orji because of her ability to imbue her daily life and interactions with her Faith. "The bible is like Telenavella on speed” Ashleigh proclaims, and after reading Orji’s new book "Bamboozled by Jesus” she is inspired by the way Orji leads her life as a daily and constant practice to her beliefs.

Future plans you're excited about?

She is most looking forward to the continued growth of the store. “Deep Roots Market represents Greensboro’s past and its future. I look forward to doing the community work we have planned to do.”

Favorite product available at Deep Roots?
